The majority of the population resides in the eastern area (11.7%), particularly near the beach areas of Tutukākā Coast, Pārua Bay, and the Heads (WHG East) and in the more urban area of Kamo, including Granfieldd Reserve (11.1%).

Almost half of the population under 14 years old live in just five suburbs:

• Kamo,

• Whangarei East (Matapouri-Tutukaka, Kiripaka, Abbey Caves-Glenbervie, Ngunguru, Pataua, Parua Bay, Bream Head),

• Whangarei North (Mangakahia-Hukerenui, Whangaruru, Hikurangi, Kauri),

• Tikipunga, and

• Whangarei West (Matarau, Maungatapere, Pukenui).

Across the whole of Whangarei, there are 5,811 children under four years old, 6,378 children aged five to nine, and 6,948 children and young people aged ten to fourteen years old. They are 20% of the total population living in Whangarei.
